Monday
When I arrived at the Foundation today Trudy and I went over
my processing plan. She thought it was
very thorough and detailed. She did want
me to add a monetary cost estimate and she suggested adjusting my proposed
series by adding to my list. Once we
finished going over the plan and reviewing last week we got out a few boxes and
I really started re-housing.
I worked through about nine boxes today. I began by separating paper records out from
among the awards, objects, and framed items.
I removed a lot of correspondence from manila envelopes and put the
material in folders. I also added a
number of folders for loose certificates and photographs. Eventually photographs will be put in
archival sleeves for permanent storage.
I then put these folders in two archival boxes, keeping the folders with
only correspondence in one box.
After lunch I began organizing and sorting the awards,
certificates, diplomas, and objects from the boxes which I was working through. I spread the material out across the table
and began sorting. Eventually the
objects fit into one box, and the plaques and framed items were divided among
five boxes, roughly according to topic: military service, education, National
Student Nurses Foundation and New York State Nursing Foundation, and a
miscellaneous box which included framed photographs, Who’s Who and other
non-nursing recognitions.
Today I focused on organizing and re-housing the paper
records. I separated out the military
records, both paper and objects; and consolidated them into about 1.5 cubic
feet. I put about one cubic foot of
correspondence records into folders, possibly to be better organized
later. Trudy and I checked on the awards
which had been rolled up. They were
considerably flatter but still needed some work, so we reversed the direction
which they were rolled in and put them back in the tubes. Trudy will let them sit for a few days then
will check on them.
I continued organizing the objects in the afternoon and put
most of the larger objects in a textile box.
The smaller objects like pins, non-military awards, and a paperweight
were put in a half cubic foot clam shell box.
I will begin wrapping the objects in archival tissue paper next week to
ensure safe packing.
